NAF’s 10,120 ton (90MN) open die forging press is one of the greatest tonnage, fastest acting and most reliable presses in the Americas. The press opening has 236 inches (6 meters) of vertical daylight and 197 inches (five meters) between the columns. The stroke is 122 inches (3.1 meters). The press is serviced by a 220 ton railbound manipulator, a 110 ton mobile manipulator and a 253 ton overhead crane.
The existing, internally designed and built 4,500 ton (40 MN) sister press is serviced by multiple 50 ton mobile manipulators. This press has been operational since 1998 and was fully rebuilt in 2013. During its operation, NAF has averaged forging more than 100,000 ingot tons per year making it one of the most productive presses in the U.S. and possibly the world. This is a testament to both the skill of the NAF forging crews and the maintenance staff that maximizes the press uptime.

THE PROCESS
Open die forging is a manufacturing process where heated metal is shaped and densified by applying great hydraulic pressure to the part between a top and bottom die. Compared to other metalworking processes, like castings, fabrications or weldments, the forging process inherently produces stronger parts by achieving contoured grain flow, fine grain size and by consolidating porosity in the part.

North American Forgemasters (NAF) is a 50-50 joint venture between Scot Forge and Ellwood Group, Inc. As an open die forge facility, NAF produces billet stock, solid and hollow preforms and custom forged shapes in sizes up to 440,000 lbs.
